Until recently, many Jewish communities around the world celebrated local “Purims” that commemorated its deliverance from a particular anti-semitic ruler or group. The best known is Purim Vintz, traditionally celebrated in Frankfurt am Main, one week after the regular Purim. This commemorates the Fettmilch uprising (1616-1620), in which one Vincenz Fettmilch attempted to exterminate the Jewish community. [4] According to some sources, the influential Rabbi Moses Sofer (the Hatam Sofer), who was born in Frankfurt, celebrated Purim Vintz every year, even when he served as a rabbi in Pressburg.

In the days preceding purim and on purim itself, we read three times of the struggle of the Jewish people against the forces of evil, personified as Amalek: first, in the special maftir from Deuteronomy 25 read on Shabbat Zachor (the Sabbath when we are admonished to remember Amalek); next, in the halfarah for Shabbat Zachor, from chapter 15 of I Samuel, which tells of the Jewish people’s war with Amalek under the leadership of King Saul; and third, in Megillat Esther, where the Jews’ enemies are identified as descendants of the Amalekite King Agag, who appears in chapter 15 of I Samuel. However, in glancing through the Plaut Chumash, I noticed that Rabbi Plaut, perhaps in the interest of not offending modern sensibilities, has excised the traditional halfarah for Shabbat Zachor, and replaced it with excerpts from the Megillah.
